Swinging Flies for Salmon in Squamish

They come in bunches, waves of salmon moving from the ocean into the rivers of their birth

They come in bunches, waves of salmon moving from the ocean into the rivers of their birth.

For Yos Gladstone, of Chromer Sport Fishing, this is the perfect time to fish for them, when they are at the very start of their journey, still strong and bright silver. Using two-handed fly rods and streamer flies, he works the currents of the cold rivers near Squamish in search of fresh runs.

“These are fresh fish that have been in the river anywhere from a couple of hours to a
couple of days,” he says.

Gladstone says he loves guiding clients and sharing with people the beauty of B.C.’s pristine coastal environments. But just as much, he loves fishing by himself with just the
eagles for company, swinging flies through the swirling currents “to see what happens.”

This river also sees a spectacular run of Chum salmon later in the year.

“Just hanging out on the Squamish main … there is fish all over the place, and we have
the place to ourselves. It’s as good as it gets,” he says.
