Bull Trout Bastion

Pursuing bull trout in the fall months in Fernie, BC

It’s not every day that guides or shop owners get a chance to fish with their industry counterparts, which makes this venture with Paul Samycia of Elk River Guiding Co. and Hilary Hutcheson of Lary’s Fly and Supply in Columbia Falls, Montana an entertaining, humorous one.

Though Hilary and Paul see some of their busiest months in the summer season, they are congruent in sharing their passion for fishing in the fall months. “It’s quiet, it’s my time” says Paul. Between the Blue Wing Olive hatches, the towering Tamarack trees making their annual transition to a vibrant golden yellow. Summertime is often referred to as prime season in the Fernie area, but the Cutthroat fishing remains stellar throughout the months of September and October.

And though the Cutthroat fishing is a huge draw for many, Paul and Hilary both love the chase of pursuing bull trout in the fall months. Stretches of gin-clear river littered with Kokanee, a freshwater counterpart of our Sockeye salmon, are never safe with this apex predator looking to fatten up before winter sets in.
