Dry Fly Heaven on the Blackwater River

After a 135 kilometre journey from the small city of Quesnel, followed by an hour-long off-road crawl in a side-by-side ATV, Fishing BC ambassadors Gill Steele and Catherine Laflamme arrive at the famed Blackwater River. The Blackwater is teeming with thick-bodied, wild rainbow trout that are keen to attack dry flies.

The trout that inhabit the Blackwater are by nature, incredibly surface-oriented fish. The summertime insect emergence get fish looking up in the hopes of scoring a nutrient-rich meal.

Angling guide Doug Mooring has designed Cariboo Rivers Fishing Adventures to offer visiting anglers the opportunity to explore the many fly fishing options that the region has. Gill and Catherine’s overnight float trip is an excellent example, enjoying the comfort and convenience of a fireside meal coupled with a productive stretch of water merely steps from camp.

Many would agree that Blackwater River is one of the finest pieces of moving water that British Columbia has to offer to the dry fly enthusiast.
