Elk River Dry Fly Fishing

Explore the Fernie area with Kootenay Fly Shop

The Elk River flows directly through Fernie, B.C and is regarded as one of the province’s finest dry-fly fisheries. “When I was eight years old my dad asked me what I wanted to do, I told him I wanted to own a fishing lodge”, this is a dream that has stayed alive for Gord Silverthorne.

Gord operates Kootenay Fly Shop and Tight Lines Lodge in Fernie. The Elk River is home to an abundance of Westslope Cutthroat trout, known for their surface-oriented behaviour and willingness to eat dry flies.

The Elk is a 220-kilometer long freestone river that flows rich with nutrients, growing Cutthroat over 20 inches long. Bull Trout are the apex predator of the Elk, and are plentiful throughout the system and its tributaries.

Gord’s passion shines through in his work, he is an advocate for hiring young anglers as shop employees to gain the knowledge that transitions them into guiding. Fernie is a prolific fly fishing destination that attracts anglers from across North America each season.

“The quality of the experience here is second to none”
