Fishing Kyuquot with Rugged Point Lodge

“Once I started fishing here, I didn’t want to fish anywhere else”

Kyuquot Sound is situated on the Northwest coast of Vancouver Island. Just eight miles from the continental divide, a plethora of migratory Chinook salmon bound near and far swim these waters that are rich in both structure and bait. “We have all the fish that are migrating from as far as Northern California, Oregon, Washington and our local rivers hit the coast here and make their way down”, Matt Guiget of Rugged Point Lodge speaks of the abundance of Chinook salmon surrounding Kyuquot.

With over 100 years of combined experience, guides at Rugged Point Lodge are employed exclusively from the Kyuquot Checlesaht First Nations. “It’s a really unique fishing area for me to come home to” says Felix Harry, a guide at Rugged Point Lodge with a lifetime of local knowledge and experience. Kyuquot’s fishery is productive largely in part to the significant presence of bait including herring, squid, smelt and sandlance needlefish. A unique feature of Rugged Point Lodge’s location are the numerous islands that extend outwards into the open ocean.
