Salmon Fishing with Squid

Explore BC's Pacific Rim in Ucluelet

A highway for Pacific salmon and a thriving fishery for Halibut and bottom fish, Ucluelet offers a remarkable fishery on British Columbia’s Pacific Rim. Bill von Brendel has a different paradigm than most when it comes to saltwater fishing for the multitude of species swimming off the coast of Ucluelet, using productive techniques such as fishing live squid for salmon and swimbaits for bottom fish.

“Not many people know how to squid fish”, says Bill as a live squid is immersed in a bucket of clean water. “It doesn’t happen all the time, on a 6 to 8 year cycle the squid come in thick and the salmon follow.”

Bill also displays light tackle fishing with swimbaits as his preferred method for targeting bottom species. “There’s a lot of different species, you never know what you’re going to get” Bill describes his swimbait techniques as more sporting and interactive than traditional methods. Fishing aside, it is the beauty of Ucluelet that attracts so many to this area.

“How could you ever get sick of a place like this, even after decades?”
