The Historic Tyee Club in Campbell River

Wooden rowboats and light tackle

Almost precisely halfway up the east coast of British Columbia’s Vancouver Island lies the small fishing town of Campbell River. Though wooden rowboats and light tackle have been edged out in popularity by larger fibreglass or aluminum boats outfitted with downriggers and expensive sonar units, there remains a thriving community of traditionalists that make up the famous Tyee Club.

Formed in 1924, the rules of the Tyee Club are not for the faint of heart, or the novice salmon angler. To enter the Tyee Club, one must land a Chinook salmon over 30 pounds, on less than 20 pound test, on an artificial lure, with only the use of the oars.

Though this would be deemed an intimidatingly tall order for many, members of the Tyee Club are plentiful and passionate about this method of angling.

“In an analogy, it is the bow hunting of Chinook salmon fishing”
