Winter Chinook on BC’s Sunshine Coast

Accessible by ferry, Powell River is nestled on British Columbia’s vibrant Sunshine Coast. It is a year-round destination for anglers looking to target both mature and immature, also referred to as “feeder”, wild Chinook salmon.

Dean Mclaren of Powell River Sportfishing has been a saltwater fishing enthusiast from a young age. Powell River’s local waters are the epitome of a thriving year-round fishery, supporting a healthy population of these wintertime immature Chinooks, joined by their migratory counterparts later in the spring.

“It’s not about filling the freezer anymore. Without a doubt it is about taking in the experience, handling the fish with care, and taking only what we need”, Dean expresses his care for a fishery close to his heart.

Along with his brother, Dean’s journey began working on charter boats as a young kid. The natural progression following his earliest days working in the sport fishing industry, combined with a relentless passion for saltwater fishing, has lead him to his ability to own and operate a guiding business of his own.

In terms of a prolific year-round fishery for Chinook enthusiasts, one would be safe to look no further than Powell River.
